The Heart of the Bill Neal Home - Part 1

At DDM’s Bill Neal Home, something special is unfolding, and it starts with three incredible women. Jessica, Shelton, and Casey share more than just a home, they share a friendship that is genuine, joyful, and deeply rooted. Their dynamic is something you can feel the moment you walk through the door. It is warm, it is welcoming, and it is full of life.

That is exactly why the Make It Home Initiative through LEAP feels so meaningful here. This initiative is all about making the look of a home match the feeling inside it. At the Bill Neal Home, the feeling has always been there. Now, it is time for the space itself to reflect that same sense of comfort, personality, and belonging.

This is where the story takes a beautiful turn.

Susan Gilbert, a longtime friend of DDM and a dedicated supporter of its mission and ministry, felt called to step in, not just with a gift, but with her time and presence. Alongside two friends from her Smoke Rise Baptist Church Sunday School class, Kate Graham and Connie Henry, Susan decided to get involved in a hands-on, meaningful way.

About two months ago, the three women visited the Bill Neal Home. They met with Jodice, DDM’s lead at the home, and spent time not only learning what was needed and wanted, but also sitting with residents and staff, sharing conversation, laughter, and connection. It was not just a visit, it was the beginning of something bigger.

Since that day, their Sunday School class has been hard at work. What started as a simple idea quickly turned into a full-hearted effort. They have gathered new items, coordinated donations, and even fundraised within their community. From a new dining table to couches, décor, and thoughtful touches throughout the home, their impact has been tangible and transformative.

"It is so easy to fill this need! We just need to do this!" said Susan Gilbert when asked about taking this hands-on approach.

But more than the items themselves, it is the intention behind them that has made this so powerful.

Our Bill Neal ladies have watched this unfold with excitement and gratitude. Their home has always been a place they love, now it is becoming a space that fully reflects who they are. A place that not only feels like home, but looks like it too.

And the story is not over.

This project is still in progress, and we cannot wait to share what comes next. In the coming weeks, we will take you deeper into this journey, including before-and-after moments and the continued transformation of the Bill Neal Home.

For now, we leave you with this: incredible things happen when people come together. The Make It Home Initiative is not just possible, it is powerful. While financial support fuels this work, there is something truly special about those who step in, take ownership, and invest their time and heart. What Susan, Kate, Connie, and their Sunday School class have done is more than generous, it is inspiring.

And we believe it is just the beginning of a movement.
