Randy has been part of the DDM family for almost twenty years—twenty!!! Today, he lives at DDM’s High Hope Home in Fayetteville alongside his three roommates: Debbie, Christiana, and Holly. For Randy, home is a place filled with friendship, laughter, and something else that means the world to him… music.
Let’s talk about Mister Randy for a minute.
The first thing you should know about him is that he LOVES music. Music is everything to Randy. He loves it all; from rock and roll to R&B and soul to the greatest hits across the decades. He’s truly a very musically cultured man! And when the music starts, so does the dancing. Few things bring Randy more joy than moving to the rhythm of his favorite songs. He also loves all things Spider-Man, fried chicken and turnip greens, and collecting stuffed animals. All in all, music is his deep love!
But Randy’s love for music goes deeper than entertainment. It’s something he’s deeply passionate about. Music, rhythm, and sound provide him with joy and regulation—two very important things for many of our residents. In many ways, it’s something we can all relate to.
We all know the feeling of having a rough day. Maybe you’ve had a long commute home. Maybe work was stressful. Then suddenly your favorite song comes on the radio… and then another great one after that. Maybe it doesn’t wash the day away completely, but suddenly things don’t feel quite so heavy.
That’s how Randy feels.
When he’s having a rougher patch, music helps bring him back. As Jamie, DDM Program Manager, explains, “It’s a whole new Randy. And the thing is, he loves his radio!”
There’s just one small challenge.
Because Randy loves his radio so much, and because he’s naturally curious, he often takes them apart to see how they work. Unfortunately, that usually means the radios don’t survive very long.
“We really need to find a way to Randy-proof a Radio,” admitted Jamie.
So that’s our mission.
Through DDM’s current LEAP (Life Enrichment & Activities Program) initiative, Make It Home, we’re on a mission to find Randy a “Randy-proof Radio.” It may sound simple, but for Randy, it would mean the ability to keep enjoying the music that brings him joy, comfort, and regulation every single day.
As Diamonique, an RSC at High Hope Home, beautifully shared, “Graceful on the dance floor and kind at heart, Randy spreads happiness through music, laughter and his caring spirit.”
Randy’s story is unique, but the heart of it is something we see across all of our homes. Each resident has something that brings them joy, comfort, and connection—a hobby, an activity, or even a simple object in their living space. These things may seem small, but they make a world of difference in daily life.
This is where LEAP comes in.
Through Make It Home, DDM works to enhance the environments where our residents live their lives. Whether it’s room refreshes, sensory spaces, or shared living room upgrades, these improvements help create homes that reflect dignity, safety, and individuality. Philanthropic support allows DDM to go beyond basic maintenance and create warm, welcoming spaces that support emotional wellbeing and independence while honoring each resident’s unique needs and preferences.
At Developmental Disabilities Ministries, we have a profound understanding of how meaningful these moments and experiences are. That’s why we wanted to share Randy’s story with you.
First, because we love celebrating the passions of our residents.
And second, because we want you, our friends and supporters, to see the real impact of your prayers, support, and generosity.
Many of our residents live with significant income limitations that prevent them from accessing certain experiences or items that bring joy and comfort. Because we believe in caring for the whole person, mind, body, and soul, we invite you to partner with us to ensure every resident has what they need to truly thrive.
So, what can you do?
First, if you can help us find a “Randy-proof Radio,” that would be incredible!
Second, prayers and involvement. As a Christian organization that seeks to live out our faith with our hands and feet, we believe deeply in the power of prayer. We also invite you to spend time with our residents. Connecting with them is incredibly meaningful for everyone involved.
Finally, philanthropic support of our LEAP initiative, Make It Home, is an opportunity to provide more than funding. It’s an opportunity to provide experiences, activities, and meaningful items that bring joy, dignity, and comfort to residents who, like Randy, spend much of their time at home and rely on these environments to help shape their daily wellbeing.
In many ways, we’re all a little like Randy. We all have something that gives us that extra spark of joy, whether it’s dancing or not.
Thank you, Randy, for being your authentic self and for filling DDM’s High Hope Home with great music, laughter, and a lot of dancing.
